The Bigger Picture

Do you have a full-length mirror? Let me rephrase this. Do you have a mirror at home? If you do, do you look at yourself in the mirror, or has it become one of the forgotten ornaments on the wall?

As an image consultant, meeting men and women of all ages, I've realised how so many people do not bother to look at themselves in the mirror. What's more, there are only a small number of people who own a full-length mirror at home. I am not suggesting that you'd become a narcissist, adoring your reflection in the mirror all day long, but there are benefits to be gained by looking at yourself, especially through a full-length mirror.

With a full-length mirror, you can:

  • make sure you are in good health

  • detect if you have gained or lost weight

  • keep yourself groomed

  • check your posture

  • always be well-coordinated from top to toe, front and back

A full-length mirror helps you to see the bigger picture of yourself. This reflection is what people see of you. No matter how meticulous your hair looks, if your heels are worn down or if your jacket does not go with your trousers, what message are you giving out to the world? It's like gardening. Do you only look after the lovely roses or do you also look after the grass, the trees, the bushes, the patio and the fence, looking at the bigger picture of your garden to create balance and harmony?

By standing in front of a full-length mirror, we face reality, whether we like it or not. By doing this, we learn to understand ourselves better. In this way, we can be in control.
